What the suds?

What is the appliance you use on a daily basis? I have at least three I use every day.

my coffee maker, my oven, and my dishwasher.

I think I would have a conniption if those three things went out. Especially, if my dishwasher went out. With a family of six, I have been blessed with the never-ending task of washing dishes. Having my dishwasher is truly a time saver.

Typically, I use dishwasher pods like Cascade or Finish. Though now, I am trying to switch over to low/nontoxic cleaners. The first nontoxic switch I tried to make was my dishwasher soap. I contemplated making my own, but with the time constraints I have right now I decided to try Earthley’s soap.

Earthley’s Dishwasher Detergent has several things going for it:

  1. No sulphates; no phosphates; no petrichemicals.
  2. Septic safe and biodegradable.
    • This was a big one, since my family has a septic system.
  3. Free of artificial fragrances.
  4. Plant-based cleaners.
  5. Easy to name and well known ingredients.
    • Citric Acid
    • Baking soda
    • Washing soda
    • Saponified Organic Coconut Oil
    • Saponified Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    • Saponified Organic Castor Oil
    • Filtered Water
  6. Safe for my littles
    • A major reason for my switch to nontoxic cleaners

As my children get older, I am trying to get them involved with caring for the house. With this comes the caution on all the cleaners “Keep away from children.” I am teaching the children to be responsible with cleaners and switching to Earthley’s detergent gave me comfort. I know to keep them away from the cleaners, but I know they wouldn’t get hurt if they got into the soap when I wasn’t looking.

Not only is it safe to have around little ones, but it also really does work. I have compared having the dishes rinsed verses not rinsed. The detergent cleans better when the dishes are rinsed. But it does remove grease and stains from my baking sheets which was impressive. There is a slight residue on my plastic dishes like bottles. I got that even with Finish detergent pods, so that did not surprise me. Adding distilled vinegar definitely helps with getting more off the dishes but that is not necessary.

“When dishwasher detergent residue is left on dishes, it can enter your body with your next meal. That next meal could be full of fragrances, surfactants, chlorine, formaldehyde, ammonia, SLS, and more.”

Here is a before and after of the detergent a fellow Earthley affiliate, Emily Philgreen, shared. There is no greasy residue that pods sometimes leaves.

All in all, I have been quite pleased with this detergent. It cleans, it is safe for my family, and it is affordable. Cascade’s Platinum plus 62 Pod container at target retails for $36.14, while Earthley’s Detergent retails for $22.99 (one time purchase) or $21.15 (Scribe & Thrive) and is about 60 loads. I spend less and know that the dishes are not only clean, but they are not filling our bodies with harmful chemicals!

Update:

After writing this blog, I started to have a few issues arise. I am not sure why, but the soap, while washing the dishes, was clogging up my filters. A residue began to form on the bottom of my dishwasher. It also appeared inside the filters.

I have stopped using it for now, and still on the search for a natural dish soap…I am contemplating making my own. So, we will see if I end up doing that.
