"These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up."
Deuteronomy 6:6-7
This past Friday, I had the privilege of going to my great aunt’s memorial service. Listening to the memories of her grandchildren and my great uncle it was clear how much she loved her family. She poured into her grandchildren. She made precious memories through the years. Whether through art, food, or just a listening ear, my aunt Pat made a lasting impression on her family and those around her.
I often think of my own grandparents when I think of legacy. Especially my dad’s dad. Trygve Bjerga was a constant, steady, and quiet leader most of my life. He was the godly patriarch of my family that I looked up to with so much love and adoration.
He encouraged me to stay true to the Lord. This was especially important when the seasons of life started to challenge me. He praised me for my accomplishments. And his love was unconditional.
He left a legacy of faith much like those listed in Hebrews 11. Each one listed lived out their faith and made an eternal impact on the generations after them.
Everyone who knew my aunt Pat or my grandpa remember them for their faith and their authentic relationship with Jesus.
I pray one day that people say the same of me when my time comes. I pray I leave a legacy of faith for the generations that follow me.
