Back to the Beginning

For the last few years I have seen Christian influencers talk about Sabbath rests. I admit, the thought of sabbath was so confusing. I knew that as a Christ Follower I was supposed to keep the sabbath. But what in the world does that mean?

I have been wrestling with that command and trying to figure out how to get back to some sort of rest in my week like I have been commanded to do.

One day, I was listening to a podcast called Nat Theo Nature Lessons Rooted in the Bible. It was an episode about hummingbirds. I was amazed that humming birds rest in spite of the busyness of their life. At the end of the podcast Eryn Lynum said she was releasing a book called The Nature of Rest: What the Bible and Creation Teach Us About Sabbath Living.

I purchased the book and was amazed as I read each page.

If you are a nature lover, you will love this book. Each day for 6 weeks you learn about a different plant or animal that has the system of rest ingrained in them. Eryn lays out how every facet of nature relies on rest to thrive in any environment.

She brings that back to us humans. We were created on day 6 and day 7 rested. We were created into rest. Our first day was the day of rest with God. But sin screwed that up for us. It tangled our wires and we have struggled to enjoy the God given rest we are called to.

Eryn gives practical advice and tips that establishes a Rest routine in our every day. And she explains how to establish a simple Sabbath day once a week.

Now that I am done with the book, I am trying to instill a rhythm of rest in my home. For the sake of my family and me we need it. We need to have the boundaries in place that place rest and time with the Lord the forefront of our household.

I would recommend this book for those who are struggling with the idea of rest. Or to the person who is trying to get back to the beginning where we were at peace and rest with the Lord.

I have learned Sabbath (rest) is a state of mind and a posture of the heart. It is something to be enjoyed, looked forward to, and looks different for each person.
