Affirmed and Sustained

God saw that the light was good (pleasing, useful) and He affirmed and sustained it; and God separated the light [distinguishing it] from the darkness. Genesis 1:4

For the past two weeks the Havice household has been running around like chickens with their heads cut off. With co-op wrapped up for the year we geared up for vacation.

I had lists upon lists that needed to be completed before we left. Rushing around, chaos in my heart and in my house, it would happen that I get sick.

For two weeks my throat and my ears have felt swollen. Pain day in and day out was a constant reminder that I was utterly exhausted and needed to rest.

In the midst of the chaos, I was reminded of humming birds.

These tiny and flighty birds embrace something that we all need to embrace.

Rest.

“Hummingbirds beat their wings up to 70 times per second…to fuel their endeavors, hummingbirds conserve energy through a strategy called torpor. The hummingbird becomes unresponsive, and an observer might fear it is dead when, in fact, torpor is what keeps it alive.” (The Nature of Rest, Eryn Lynum)

I was amazed at God’s design. And enamored at how everything in nature has a rest period. Bears go into hibernation; trees go dormant in the fall and winter.

Yet humans rush round and round until like tops we fall over in weariness.

How would our lives look if we decided to slow down and enjoy the rest that God calls us to. How would my life look like if I truly cast my burdens on Him who has sustained life from the moment He spoke it into existence?

God is the life giver, and He will sustain us like He always have. We need only rest in Him.
