Endless Creativity

A mom’s review on magnet tiles and hedgehog building blocks

Finding toys that keep my kiddos busy and screen free has been difficult. I want to have my kids have educational and Montessori style toys that challenge them and inspire creativity.

Many moms in my generation are coming to realize that too much screen time is actually disruptive to brain development.

Ginger Hubbard (episodes 29 and 30 ) along with Focus on the Family have podcasts on the impact screen time has on young children.

Because of those podcasts and the impact screens have on me (see Make the Switch) I decided a long time ago I would not be an iPad parent or have iPad children. While we were on vacation it was definitely difficult not letting TV or movies be in control.

We didn’t have our normal toys and activities to keep us busy. So before vacation I purchased new Picasso magnet tiles and Hedgehog blocks. As we used them almost daily, I can finally give an honest mom’s review!

Picasso Magnet Tiles

These are 100% worth the money. Thankfully Picasso Tiles are cheaper than Magnatiles so you can get more for your buck. These building tiles bring hours of endless play and creativity to the home. Minimal mass to clean up (WIN) and STEM focused, these tiles have been a great investment. My boys especially like the track set.

Pros:

  1. Challenges the mind
  2. Encourages Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics logic.
  3. Fun for all ages (2+)
  4. Many different brands work together (Picasso Tiles, Magnatiles, Connetix)
  5. Picasso Tiles do not use small screws. Their magnets are 100% enclosed.

Cons:

  1. Cracks easily
  2. No extra support within the plastic

Overall, Picasso magnet tiles have been a huge win for our kids.

Hedgehog Blocks

These blocks I was so excited to use with the kids! But the warning on the box about choking hazards I can attest to. Thank the Lord my 10-month-old has not choked but the pikes on the blocks have been falling off and we have only had them since May.

While the concept on the toys is neat with interlocking bristles, they are really not safe to have around crawlers or teething babies. Having 4 kids under 5 years old, I look for toys that I can safely have out while all my children are up.

Unfortunately, I am not comfortable having the hedgehog toys out while my youngest is up. But my other three (2.5-5 years) love building and creating with them! If I were to get more, I would have a designated Hedgehog block area where babies can’t get into.
