It is a well-known fact that music impacts the brain. I am not a scientist, but I have definitely noticed the impact it has on me. Certain music chills me out, some stresses me out, while others just grate on my nerves.
Finding a nice balance for myself and my kids has been a goal of mine since my oldest was a baby. There are times that I have to turn it off because I am overstimulated and then get irritated with everything around me. But for the most part music is a constant in my home.
While looking to teach my children to memorize I learned how quickly they retained verses when it was put to a song. For example, Slugs and Bugs have 4 albums called “Sing the Bible.” I will use these songs for memory verses for my kids. My favorite song is “Be Kind and Compassionate” from Sing the Bible Volume 3. It is Ephesians 4:32 put to music. Within a week or two, my kids, me and my husband had it memorized. I would hear them sing it throughout the day. What a win for my family!
With school still in session at our house, I have started to teach my 2-year-old the letters and letter sounds. So after having individual lessons with my older boys, I will sit them all down and do her lesson videos.
I use The Good and the Beautiful songs. We use their preschool and kindergarten prep curriculum for this year. We have access to their musical library through their free app and on Youtube.
These educational videos are put to the most peaceful music. It is relaxing to me as the mama, but I truly believe it relaxes them too. Allowing them to retain more.
Just a few minutes ago I heard my oldest singing their Vowel Song!
Having music in my tool belt as a mama has been instrumental (no pun intended) for me!
If you are looking for a good, relaxing and free addition to your day, look at The Good and Beautiful on youtube or their free app (linked below). If you are looking for something to help you memorized scripture with your kids or just on your own definitely look at Slugs and Bug, Shane and Shane, or Steve Green.
